Join us this month as we explore unearthed beauty: The Ethical & Sustainable Journey of Sri Lankan Sapphires

Sri Lanka has long been celebrated for its exquisite sapphires, with small-scale mining techniques that have been refined over a thousand years. What sets Sri Lankan sapphires apart isn’t just their brilliance and color, but the ethical and sustainable practices that support the industry. At Good Khin Gems, LLC, we care about our world and preserving the environment, that is why we make thoughtful choices when choosing a variety of gemstones that not only entrance you with their beauty, but we take special pride knowing that most of these stones come from sources that uphold responsible mining practices.

One of Sri Lanka’s most innovative mining policies directly contributes to environmental restoration. In the past, unfilled gem mining pits provided the perfect breeding grounds for malaria-carrying mosquitoes. However, in recent decades, Sri Lanka’s governing body has had the forethought to implement a deposit-based system for mining licenses. This means a significant portion of the license fee is refunded only after the land has been properly restored. As a result, Sri Lanka has been malaria-free since 2016—a testament to the success of this initiative. When you purchase a Sri Lankan sapphire, you’re indirectly supporting a process that ensures land rehabilitation and a healthier environment.

Nestled in Sri Lanka’s renowned Rathnapura district, the town of Nivithigala thrives as a key hub for sapphire mining. Unlike the bustling gem markets of Rathnapura city, which function like a polished supermarket, Nivithigala’s gem trade operates more like a traditional farmer’s market. Here, small-scale miners and brokers gather every morning, ensuring that business remains personal, fair, and community-driven. Good Khin Gems, LLC partners with experienced cutters and miners who have deep-rooted connections in the region.

Through stable and predictable purchasing practices, we support the livelihoods of small-scale miners, ensuring fair trade and ethical sourcing. Our sourcing model embraces sapphires in all shapes, colors, and unique characteristics, reinforcing our commitment to both artistry and sustainability. When purchasing a sapphire, it’s important to know its origins and ethical impact, the story behind the precious stone you bought, and it’s journey from the mine to the wedding. At Good Khin Gems, LLC, we are committed to supporting, as much as we can, environmental restoration and sustainable mining.

By choosing Good Khin Gems, LLC, you’re not just investing in a stunning gemstone—you too can support a time-honored tradition of ethical mining, environmental responsibility, and fair trade. When you buy a Sri Lankan sapphire, you become part of a story that spans centuries, where tradition meets modern responsibility. Every stone has a journey, and we ensure that journey is one of integrity, sustainability, and beauty.

March Birthstone

March has two Birthstones: Aquamarine and Bloodstone. Both of these drastically different stones are associated with personal protection.

Aquamarine in its vibrant blues and greens, brings to mind the healing calm of water and the sea. Moonstone, however, is dark green with “blood red” spots and conjures images of fortitude and strength.
